What Are Vegetables?

 



Vegetables are savory foods that contain important vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. These plant-based foods are rich in dietary fiber, too. They are low in fat and calories and provide essential energy. They play a key role in our diets and offer a variety of flavors, textures and colors to enjoy. Many people wonder, however, whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. Although tomatoes technically fit the botanical definition of a fruit (the mature, seed-filled ovary of a flowering plant), they're often referred to as vegetables. This is partly because the word "vegetable" has an alternative meaning that reflects the way that we use these plants in cooking, rather than their botanical characteristics.

The most common definition of a vegetable is that it is an edible portion of a herbaceous or non-herbaceous plant, such as its leaves, stems, roots, tubers and flowers. A vegetable can be eaten raw or cooked, and may or may not contain seeds. Vegetables are usually low in fat, containing only 0.5 to 3.5 percent fat, and have a high water content. They are also very nutritious, providing vitamins and minerals, particularly potassium, calcium, iron and vitamin C.

In culinary terms, a vegetable is any part of the plant that's used for food. This includes leaves (lettuce, spinach), stems (broccoli, asparagus), bulbs (onion, leek), root ผักกินดอกมีอะไรบ้าง like carrots and parsnips, tubers like the potato, and flowers (broccoli, kale, cauliflower). Some vegetables are eaten raw, while others are boiled, steamed, baked or roasted to bring out their flavors. Many are cultivated in gardens, but they can also be harvested from wild plants or grown for commercial purposes in greenhouses.

It's not unusual to see the words 'fruit and vegetable' next to each other on menus and grocery store shelves. That's because many of the fruits that we commonly refer to as vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and eggplants, are actually considered fruits by botanists. In fact, the Supreme Court of the United States has even weighed in on this controversy.

The botanical distinction is important because it helps to determine what's included in nutrition labels and what gets displayed on shelves in the produce section of a supermarket. But in reality, most consumers don't pay much attention to the difference between a fruit and a vegetable when choosing what to buy and cook. That's why the broader, everyday definition of a vegetable is still the one that matters most to most people, even if it doesn't always reflect how a plant is used in cooking or what's written in the dictionary. These days, the terms are usually used interchangeably, and there's no reason to be picky about it. Just make sure that the foods you choose are fresh and wholesome!
