FIFA 777 on the PSP

In general, the game is easier to play than last year's version, although you still have to work hard to beat a good human opponent. The main reason is that players accelerate and decelerate more realistically, which means it's harder to keep the ball without passing or using a trick move. This also makes the right analog stick trick moves a lot less forgiving; if you hit a player in motion and then hit the ground, they will often fall awkwardly, making it difficult to beat defenders one-on-one.

Another change from previous games is that the cheap shots (power-ups for teams) don't work the same way anymore. Instead of boosting a team's chances of winning before a match, the system now rewards the winning team with better cheap shots. It's a small change, but it makes the overall experience feel less satisfying.

Whether playing in Fifa777 Lounge or online, the game's well-presented lobby system makes it easy to find opponents and chat with them. The PSP's chat system works very well, too, allowing you to type in text as you play. The only thing missing from the online experience is anything resembling the interactive leagues mode that has been introduced to other versions of FIFA 07 this year.

In addition to the main matches, there are also a number of different minigames, such as Wall Attack and the aforementioned Ultimate Team mode. These add variety to the gameplay and can be practiced at any time from the main menu.

The commentary and crowd roars on the PSP don't quite match the intensity of those in the home console games, but they do a pretty good job of conveying the atmosphere of a soccer match. The crowds will cheer or boo depending on the outcome of the match, and players will receive thunderous applause when they score and venomous boos when they foul. And the best part is that these reactions can be heard even if the match is being played in 3D mode. These are details that really make a difference when it comes to capturing the essence of a soccer match. The only drawback is that the PSP's screen is too small to see the action clearly. This is particularly a problem when watching 3D matches on the same TV as you're playing the game. It's definitely worth playing on a bigger monitor if you can. Otherwise, the game is still as enjoyable as it ever was.
